KEPRO Launches “Taka Tu: Kutupa Kwa Bin” Campaign to Keep Matatus Litter-Free
KEPRO has launched the “Taka Tu: Kutupa Kwa Bin” campaign targeting Kenya's matatu sector to promote responsible waste disposal among commuters. This initiative, part of KEPRO's Consumer-Led Transformation (CLT) strategy, will transform matatus into mobile hubs advocating environmental responsibility through engaging branding, interior materials, audio-visual messages, and strategically placed bins. In collaboration with matatu operators, the campaign aims to establish responsible waste disposal as a natural habit, supporting KEPRO’s broader goal of advancing sustainable waste management practices in Kenya.
The Kenya Extended Producer Responsibility Organization (KEPRO) today announced the launch of a dynamic public awareness campaign targeting the bus/matatu sector as part of its broader Consumer-Led Transformation (CLT) initiative. Under the powerful slogan “Taka Tu: Kutupa Kwa Bin – Help Keep This Bus Litter Free”, the campaign aims to instill a culture of responsible waste disposal among commuters and the general public.
This initiative marks a significant step in Phase 1 of KEPRO’s CLT strategy, which focuses on raising awareness about the fundamental practice of proper waste disposal—simply putting waste in a bin. Recognizing the matatu's pivotal role in daily transportation and its cultural influence, KEPRO is strategically partnering with matatu owners, associations, and operators to transform these vehicles into mobile hubs for promoting environmental responsibility.
The “Taka Tu: Kutupa Kwa Bin” campaign will feature a multi-pronged approach within matatus, including:
- Visually Engaging Branding: Matatus will be adorned with vibrant artwork and stickers prominently displaying the campaign slogan and impactful visuals that encourage passengers to use provided bins.
- Interior Awareness Materials: Posters, flyers, and potentially digital screens inside matatus will reinforce the message with clear and concise information in both English and Swahili.
- Audio-Visual Messaging: Short, catchy audio-visual messages will be played during commutes, reminding passengers of their responsibility to keep the vehicles and the environment clean.
- Engagement with Matatu Crews: KEPRO will collaborate with matatu drivers and conductors, empowering them to champion the “Taka Tu” message and encourage passengers to dispose of waste responsibly.
- Strategic Bin Placement: KEPRO will work with matatu operators to ensure the availability of accessible and clearly marked bins within the vehicles.
Speaking at the launch event held today in Westlands, Nairobi, James Odongo, the Chief Executive Officer at KEPRO, stated, “The matatu sector presents a unique and powerful platform to connect with a vast number of Kenyans daily. Through the ‘Taka Tu: Kutupa Kwa Bin’ campaign, we are taking a direct and engaging approach to cultivate a sense of personal responsibility for waste. Our goal is simple yet crucial: to make putting waste in a bin a natural and automatic behaviour for everyone.”
Dishon Kirima, CEO – Tunyce Media added, “We are excited to partner with KEPRO on this important initiative. Matatu operators are committed to providing a clean and comfortable environment for our passengers, and the ‘Taka Tu’ campaign will significantly support these efforts. We believe this collaborative approach will foster a greater sense of care for our vehicles and our city.”
Mr. Joab Logemere, Director in-charge of Corporate Services at the Nairobi Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (NaMATA) stated, “We wholeheartedly support KEPRO's ‘Taka Tu: Kutupa Kwa Bin’ campaign. Keeping matatus clean benefits all commuters. We will collaborate with KEPRO and operators to promote this vital message of responsible waste disposal for a cleaner Nairobi's public transport.”
The “Taka Tu: Kutupa Kwa Bin” campaign is a key component of KEPRO’s five-year CLT roadmap, which will progressively build towards waste segregation at source and promoting recycling. This initial phase focuses on establishing the fundamental habit of using bins, paving the way for more advanced waste management practices in the future.
KEPRO calls upon all commuters, matatu operators, and the general public to embrace the “Taka Tu: Kutupa Kwa Bin” message and actively participate in keeping our matatus and our environment litter-free. Every small action contributes to a cleaner and more sustainable Kenya.
