KAM Launches Kenya Plastic Action

Manufacturers have launched a plan to sustainably manage plastic waste in the country. Dubbed Kenya Plastic Action Plan, the private sector-led Policy and Action Plan seeks to enable a circular economy for the environmentally sustainable use and recycling of plastics in Kenya

KAM launches Business Plan model for Producer Responsibility Organization

Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) launched the Strategic Business Plan for the establishment of a Plastic Producer Responsibility Organization (PRO) in Kenya. The PRO will drive collective Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) in the country, whereby a producer’s responsibility for a product is extended to the post-consumer stage of a product’s life cycle, whilst turning plastic waste into valuable resources.

KEPRO Incorporated

KEPRO (Kenya Producer Responsibility Organisation) was incorporated on January 19th 2021, with the support of being incubated out of KAM, and having the widest Board representation across all stakeholders.

STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENT

The journey to a true Circular Economy starts with full stakeholder inclusion & collaboration because no single company or industry sector can achieve the destination alone.

PACKAGING USERS

Packaging Users are the brands, fillers, packers, re-packers, and importers of products that are sold in the market that require some form of packaging. KEPRO fees that apply to this stakeholder group include
Annual Membership fees apply & are used to build KEPRO's organisational capacity, increase national awareness for recycling & circular ecosystems, create linkages for recyclable packaging design, and recognise packaging users who are doing the right thing
Monthly EPR fees apply (based on the volume of packaging purchased/consumed) & are used to support the recycling ecosystem to ensure the packaging waste of KEPRO members is collected, sorted & recycled.

CONVERTORS

Packaging Convertors are the manufacturers of various types of packaging made from raw materials or semi-finished raw materials for the Packaging Users to pack their products into. KEPRO fees that apply to this stakeholder group include
Annual Membership fees & Monthly EPR fees apply (based on the volume of packaging supplied) & are used to build KEPRO's organisational capacity, increase national awareness for recycling & circular ecosystems,  create linkages for recyclable packaging design, and recognise packaging convertors who are doing the right thing.

RAW MATERIALS

Raw Material suppliers are produce and/or supply primary or intermediate raw materials to Packaging Convertors for converting into finished or semi-finished components for a packaging solution to be supplied to Packaging Users. KEPRO fees that apply to this stakeholder group include
Annual Membership fees apply & are used to build KEPRO's organisational capacity, increase national awareness for recycling & circular ecosystems, create linkages for recyclable packaging design, and recognise raw material suppliers who are doing the right thing

RETAIL TRADERS

Retail Traders refers to distributors, food outlets, restaurants, clubs, hotels, resorts & retailers of packaged goods. All sizes of retailers are included from shopping malls to kiosks, from large modern retail to small informal retail.
Annual Membership fees apply (based on the number of outlets under a retail brand, and whether in formal or informal retail) & are used to build KEPRO's organisational capacity, increase national awareness for recycling & circular ecosystems, engage retail shops/stores to support the waste collection & develop the refillable/reusable retail model.

Supply Chain Operators refers to companies engaged in the storage and transportation of materials, packaging, packaged products, and waste at different stages of the value chain.
Annual Membership fees apply (based on size of operation) & are used towards auditing & reconciliation of the mass flows through the waste value chain from collection to sorting to recycling to offtake.

wASTE COLLECTORS

Waste Collectors refers to companies engaged in the collection and transportation of waste in single or separate streams from waste at formal or informal disposal points or from the environment.
Annual Membership fees apply (based on formal or informal sector, and size of operation) & are used towards auditing & reconciliation of the mass flows through the waste value chain from collection to sorting to recycling to offtake.

WASTE SORTERS

Waste Sorters refers to companies engaged in the sorting of waste into separate material fractions for sending downstream, preferably towards reuse, repair, recycling or composting purposes; otherwise if not possible then to incineration or landfill companies.
Annual Membership fees apply (based on formal or informal sector, and size of operation) & are used towards auditing & reconciliation of the mass flows through the waste value chain from collection to sorting to recycling to offtake.

WASTE RECYCLERS

Waste Recyclers refers to companies engaged in the reprocessing of sorted post consumer material waste into a form that can be used by a convertor to manufacture either a different product (ie. Down Cycling) or back into the same application from which the waste came (ie. Circular Recycling) without compromising packaging safety standards.
Annual Membership fees apply (based on formal or informal sector, and size of operation) & are used towards auditing & reconciliation of the mass flows through the waste value chain from collection to sorting to recycling to offtake.

NATIONAL & LOCAL GOVERNMENT

Engage KEPRO to partner with private sector voluntary EPR development & for national EPR legislation & regulation, and engage KEPRO to support stakeholders at country & sub-county levels.
